Last year, despite the pandemic which shook the world, surging stock prices and blockbuster initial public offerings meant it was an excellent year for the world's billionaires.

According to an annual list published by Forbes, last year a record 493 individuals became billionaires, approximately one every 17 hours. This included 210 new entrants from China and Hong Kong, and 250 former billionaires which had lost their status, and regained it. An eye-watering 86 percent of billionaires are richer than they were a year ago. 

There were also younger billionaires - both self-made and inherited - than ever before, and younger self-made female billionaires than ever before. We take a look at the 16 youngest new billionaires, according to Forbes. 

1. Kevin David Lehmann 

Age: 18

Net worth: US$3.3bn

Country: Germany

Kevin David Lehmann owns half of Germany's leading drugstore chain, dm (drogerie markt), which makes over US$12 billion in annual revenue.

2. Wang Zelong

Age: 24

Net worth: US$1.5bn

Country: China

Wang Zelong's assets comes from stakes in CNNC Hua Yuan Titanium Dioxide and Lomon Billions Group; both make titanium dioxide in China.

3. Austin Russell

Age: 26

Net worth: US$2.4bn

Country: US

Austin Russell founded and heads automotive sensor firm Luminar Technologies, which listed in a SPAC merger in December 2020. He is a college dropout. 

4. Andy Fang

Age: 28

Net worth: US$2bn

Country: US

Andy Fang is a co-founder of food delivery app DoorDash and works as its head of consumer engineering.

Age: 28

Country: US

Stanley Tang is a co-founder and head of labs at California-based restaurant delivery app DoorDash.

Xu Yi is the founder and president of Bilibili, one of China's largest media businesses.

9. Whitney Wolfe Herd

Age: 31

Country: US

Whitney Wolfe Herd co-founded and runs Bumble Inc., which has two online dating apps: Bumble and Badoo.

10. Fred Ehrsam

Age: 32

Net worth: US$1.9bn

Ehrsam co-founded cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase nine years ago. It has since grown into the largest U.S. crypto brokerage.
